In the early days, Microsoft had a compelling vision: "a PC on every desk and in every home" . Microsoft's mission propelled them for a long time. You could argue that they have achieved their early vision. What is Microsoft's vision today? To "help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential" . Or, in marketing-speak, "Your potential, our passion".
Here is the Skype's vision. Make calls from your computer — free to other people on Skype and cheap to phones and mobiles around the world.
When we look around at the most successful projects and their products of our times, there is always a really compelling vision which drives the project. A compelling vision statement can make the difference between carrying the stones Vs building the cathedral. This is agreat investment one can make, which will result in better productivity, quality, motivation, lesser time in monitoring and control!.
Once I had to manage a small team to manage an internal project. It was very difficult to motivate them ( most of their colleagues were working on revenue earning - external projects). We started with an idea document in which all the team members recorded their views on 'How to make the product of this project a big success". Slowly it built up momentum and in the final analysis we exceeded the expectations of our customers.
